The Challenge

What OpenSea was up against.

OpenSea rebuilt its entire site as an application. The product experience improved and the crawlability collapsed. The pages that search engines and AI models needed to read were being rendered client side, so from a crawler's point of view the category leader had almost nothing readable on it.

That is a bad position anywhere and a fatal one in AI search, because engines answer marketplace questions from sources they can actually retrieve and quote. OpenSea's own site had stopped being one of them. Across tracked NFT and Web3 prompts it was cited in roughly 5 percent of relevant answers, nowhere near its real standing in the category.

The Approach

How we attacked it.

We had been working with OpenSea for three years when the AEO work started in early 2026, which meant we could skip discovery and go straight at the problem. The first job was not content. It was making the site legible to machines again, then rebuilding the third-party presence the engines actually cite.

  • Rebuilt crawlability after the move to an application architecture, so pages could be read and quoted again
  • Tracked prompt set across NFT, Web3 and crypto, baselined per engine with the exact source URLs behind each answer
  • Content fixes and rewrites on the pages that answer marketplace research questions
  • Citation work on the third-party sources engines lean on for the category, including getting OpenSea named in a Forbes article
  • Weekly citation share reporting with prompt-level movement
