The short answer
AI search has shifted from a novelty to a default step in how buyers research, compare, and choose. The statistics that actually matter fall into four groups: how many buyers now use AI to research (adoption), where AI engines pull their answers from (citations), which content formats get quoted most (format), and what all of it does to pipeline (business impact).
The three numbers to remember: about 71 percent of B2B software buyers now rely on AI chatbots for software research (G2), roughly 43.8 percent of ChatGPT-cited pages are listicles (Ahrefs), and in our own tracking a brand's own website is only 2 to 6 percent of the sources AI engines cite in its category. Everything below expands on those, with every figure attributed to its source.
Adoption: how many buyers use AI to research
The most consequential statistic for anyone running a brand right now is buyer adoption. About 71 percent of B2B software buyers now rely on AI chatbots for software research, up from 60 percent just seven months earlier, according to G2 research reported via PRNewswire. Nearly three quarters of a typical B2B funnel now runs through an AI engine before a buyer ever visits a site or reads a review.
That has direct implications for pipeline. If you are not visible in AI answers, you are invisible to a substantial share of in-market buyers from their very first step.
Adoption is reshaping the classic search surface too. About 68 percent of Google searches now end without a click, per SparkToro's 2026 analysis of Similarweb clickstream data, up from about 60 percent in 2024. Only about 276 of every 1,000 searches now produce a click to the open web. As AI answers and overviews satisfy more queries directly on the results page, the value of ranking for a click that never happens falls, and the value of being the cited source inside the answer rises.
Citations: where AI engines actually pull answers from
Most AEO advice tells you to optimize your website. That advice is incomplete, and our own data shows why. We track how AI engines answer real buyer questions for live client brands. When we aggregated the source domains those engines cited over a recent 90-day window and classified every one, a clear pattern held across completely unrelated industries: a brand's own website is a tiny fraction of what AI actually quotes.
Here is the full breakdown. "Own site" is the brand's own domain. "Third-party" combines editorial (news, blogs, magazines), community (forums and social), and reference (encyclopedias and documentation) sources.
The takeaway is not that your website does not matter. It has to be retrievable and answer-first to be eligible at all. The takeaway is that being eligible is table stakes, and the brands that win the answer are the ones showing up across the third-party sources the model trusts.
The source mix looks different in every vertical
The 2 to 6 percent own-site finding holds everywhere, but the composition of the third-party majority shifts by category. In our tracking, auto insurance answers leaned heavily on corporate sources (52.2 percent) with editorial at 16.8 percent and reference at 13.8 percent. Beauty and skincare answers were editorial-dominant, with editorial at 41.4 percent and user-generated community content at 16.6 percent. Cannabis retail was the most corporate-heavy of the three at 65.6 percent, with editorial at 14.1 percent and community at 9.9 percent.
| Source type | Auto insurance | Beauty / skincare | Cannabis retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corporate | 52.2% | 25.5% | 65.6% |
| Editorial | 16.8% | 41.4% | 14.1% |
| Reference | 13.8% | 0.9% | 1.9% |
| User-generated (community) | 4.3% | 16.6% | 9.9% |
| Your own site | 4.0% | 5.8% | 2.0% |
| Institutional | 2.0% | 2.3% | 2.6% |
| Competitor | 6.2% | n/a | 1.1% |

The practical lesson: before you invest, find out which source types dominate your own category. A beauty brand should prioritize editorial and community placements. An insurance or cannabis brand should focus on the corporate and editorial sources their engines lean on. The AEO Labs AI visibility audit produces exactly this per-vertical map.
Content format: what gets cited most
Understanding which content formats AI engines prefer is the practical starting point for any optimization program, and the data is unusually clear.
The dominant format is the listicle. Roughly 43.8 percent of the pages ChatGPT cites are listicles, meaning best-of and top-X style pages, according to Ahrefs analysis of more than a billion data points. Best-of roundups, comparison guides, and ranked lists are the single most cited content format in AI answers. This is why earning placement in editorial best-of lists is often the fastest path to citation, and why brands that invest in third-party roundup placements tend to see results faster than those optimizing only their own product pages.
Structured data affects how reliably a model can extract facts from a page too. Clean, machine-readable markup gives the model your facts unambiguously rather than forcing it to infer them from prose, which makes accurate extraction more likely. For any brand with a product catalog, service list, or FAQ, schema markup for AI search is one of the highest-leverage technical improvements available.
Business impact: what these numbers do to pipeline
Adoption and citation data only matter because of what they do to revenue. Two implications stand out.
First, the buyers arriving from AI are further along. Because an AI-referred visitor has already asked a specific question and been directed to you as an answer, they arrive pre-qualified. That is a different quality of visit than a broad keyword click.
Second, the surfaces are separate. A brand that ranks on page one for its category keywords can still be invisible in AI answers if it lacks the structured data, editorial citations, and answer-first content AI engines rely on. Optimizing for one surface does not automatically win the other, which is why SEO still matters alongside AI search but does not replace dedicated AEO work.
How long it takes to show up
For brands starting an AEO program from scratch, the timeline question is understandable. AI citations typically appear within 4 to 8 weeks of implementing AEO best practices. That is a shorter feedback loop than traditional SEO, which often requires months to see movement in organic rankings.
The 4 to 8 week range reflects how frequently browsing-enabled engines re-index fresh content and how quickly editorial citations from newly earned roundup placements get factored in. Brands with existing authority, clean structured data, and a head start on third-party citations tend to see movement at the faster end.
Watch: a primer on Answer Engine Optimization
If you are new to the concept behind these statistics, this short explainer from Ahrefs covers what AEO is and why it matters before you act on the numbers above.
Key takeaways
- About 71 percent of B2B software buyers now rely on AI chatbots for software research (G2), and about 68 percent of Google searches end without a click (SparkToro / Similarweb).
- In our own tracking, a brand's own website is only 2 to 6 percent of the sources AI engines cite in its category. The rest is third-party, and the exact mix varies by vertical.
- Roughly 43.8 percent of ChatGPT-cited pages are listicles (Ahrefs), making best-of and comparison placements the fastest tractable lever for citation share.
- Machine-readable structured data makes a model's extraction of your facts more reliable, so schema is high-leverage technical work.
- AEO results typically appear within 4 to 8 weeks, a faster feedback loop than traditional SEO.
Where to start
These statistics describe a search landscape where nearly three in four buyers have already talked to an AI before reaching your site, where Google rankings and AI citations are largely separate populations, and where listicle placements and structured data are the two most tractable levers. The practical conclusion is that AI search visibility is both more urgent and more actionable than many brands realize.
Turn the industry data into a plan for your brand. An AI visibility audit from AEO Labs maps where you stand today across the major AI engines, which sources those engines cite in your category, and the exact gap between your current visibility and the brands getting recommended. If you are still mapping the landscape, start with what Answer Engine Optimization is, learn how to rank in ChatGPT, or compare the best AEO tools for tracking your progress.
