The short answer
You already know you need tracking; this guide is about choosing the tracker. For whether to track at all, and for the wider tool landscape, start with our best AEO tools pillar. Here the question is narrower: which product gives you trustworthy position data, refreshed often enough, across the engines you care about, with alerts you will not learn to ignore and history you can actually export, at a sane cost per tracked prompt.
Our daily driver is Peec AI, from $95/mo with 50 prompts and 3 engines of your choice, and everything we say about it below comes from running client tracking on it every day. The other six trackers here, Otterly.ai, Profound, Rankshift, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, HubSpot AEO, and Ahrefs Brand Radar, we have evaluated on their published specs and pricing, all verified September 2026, not in production. The honest headline: at 100 tracked prompts, real published prices span $82 to $399 a month, and the spread is mostly about engine coverage and depth, not vendor greed.
Rank tracking in AI search is not SERP tracking
Classic rank trackers query a search engine and read a deterministic results page: position 4 is position 4, and tomorrow it is probably still position 4. AEO rank tracking works against a fundamentally different machine, and three differences change how you should evaluate every tool.
Answers are non-deterministic. The same prompt, in clean sessions minutes apart, can name your brand first, third, or not at all. We watch this happen daily across client dashboards. A single measurement is partly luck, which means a tracker's real product is not a number but a sampling method.
Position means order of mention. There is no page of ten blue links. "Ranking" in an AI answer means where you appear in the generated text: the first brand recommended, the fourth in a comparison table, or a grudging aside at the end. Good trackers score this order-of-mention position per prompt, per engine, and trend it.
The trend is the product. Because every reading is a sample, the value is in the accumulated history: 7-day averages, per-engine trend lines, and the ability to diff this week against last. A tracker with daily runs and exportable history is a measurement instrument; a tracker with weekly runs and dashboard-only charts is a screenshot generator.
That framing gives you the five things to actually compare:
- Refresh cadence. Daily runs or bust, for statistical reasons, not urgency.
- Position metrics across engines. Order-of-mention rank per engine, not just a binary mention flag.
- Alerts on position change. Thresholds on averages, so signal survives the noise.
- Historical data and export. Raw per-prompt history you can pull out via CSV, connector, or API.
- Prompt-count pricing. The cost per tracked prompt at your real prompt volume, times the engines included.
If you are evaluating on broader monitoring criteria, citation sources, sentiment, share of voice, that job has its own guide: our AEO monitoring tools comparison. This page stays on the position-tracking job.

The tracker-specific readings:
Peec AI is the one we can vouch for from daily use. Prompts run every day on all plans, position and visibility are trended per engine, and the history is deep enough that we build weekly client reports straight from it. One change worth knowing if you read older coverage: base plans now include 3 AI models of your choice (picked from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Perplexity, and Gemini), with additional models sold as paid add-ons at $30, $70, or $140 per model depending on tier, and Enterprise stretching to 12 models including Claude and Grok. Brand plans are $95, $245, and $495 monthly for 50, 150, and 350 prompts, with 15 percent off annual and unlimited users. Full hands-on detail in our Peec AI review.
Rankshift is the newest entrant here and the aggressive one on price: $82/mo on annual billing buys 150 prompts a day with 9 engines available, and the $189/mo Professional tier lists 350 prompts a day. It ships a Looker Studio connector plus MCP and REST APIs, which is a strong export story at this price, and unlimited projects and seats on all plans. The caution is maturity: it is a young product from a small European team with thin third-party review volume, and its credit-pool metering means you should verify on the 30-day trial how your prompt-times-engine volume actually draws down before trusting the headline numbers.
Otterly.ai meters by prompt tier: 15 prompts at $29/mo, 100 at $189, 400 at $489, with annual billing 15 percent off. The four base engines are ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot; Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons that can materially move the bill, so price your real engine list before assuming it is the budget pick. Extra blocks of 100 prompts are $99 on the two upper tiers.
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is the incumbent-SEO-stack answer: $99/mo per domain billed annually for 25 custom tracked prompts with daily rankings, competitor research against up to 4 rivals, and 300 reports a day. Note the split cadence, prompt tracking refreshes daily but the Brand Performance view updates weekly, and note the engine list (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity; no Claude or Copilot). More prompts mean the Semrush One bundles: 50 prompts at $199/mo, 100 at $299, 200 at $549.
HubSpot AEO is the cheapest daily tracker on this page at $50/mo standalone, no HubSpot plan required, with 25 prompts run daily against ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and a 2,500-answer monthly pool. It is included in Marketing Hub Pro and Enterprise (Enterprise doubles you to 50 prompts and 5,000 answers), there is a 28-day free trial, and its CRM-powered prompt suggestions are genuinely differentiated. Two caveats: it still carries a Beta label in the product docs, and 3 engines with a 25-prompt cap is a starter kit, not a program.
Profound publishes Starter at $99/mo billed yearly, but that tier tracks ChatGPT only, with 50 prompts and 1,500 responses a month, which makes it a single-engine tracker at Peec's multi-engine price. Growth at $399/mo billed yearly gets you 100 prompts, 9,000 responses, and three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews). The enterprise tier is where the nine-engine coverage, API, and SSO live, at custom pricing.
Ahrefs Brand Radar restructured in 2026: the AI Visibility Index is $199/mo for up to 83 prompts a day and 2,500 checks a month (overage at $0.02 per check), with platforms selected within the plan from six, but it requires a paid Ahrefs base plan, so the cheapest real stack is $328/mo (Lite at $129 plus the index). Custom prompt packs start at $50/mo per 2,500 checks. If you already pay for Ahrefs, the marginal $199 is defensible; as a standalone tracker purchase, the required base plan makes the math hard.
The cost-per-prompt math at 50, 100, and 350 prompts
Prompt-count pricing is where trackers actually compete, and the only honest way to compare is to fix a prompt volume and read the price. Three checkpoints, using published September 2026 pricing only.
At 50 prompts: Peec Starter is $95/mo with 3 engines of your choice. Profound Starter is $99/mo billed yearly on ChatGPT alone. Rankshift Starter at $82/mo annual clears 50 easily with its 150-a-day allowance. Semrush One's Starter bundle lists 50 prompts at $199/mo. Otterly's $29 Lite tier caps at 15 prompts, so 50 pushes you to the $189 Standard tier. HubSpot AEO caps at 25 prompts standalone, so it only reaches 50 inside Marketing Hub Enterprise.
At 100 prompts: this is the cleanest comparison point, charted below. Rankshift $82, Otterly Standard $189, Peec Pro $245, Semrush One Pro+ $299, Profound Growth $399.
At 350 prompts: the field collapses to three published options. Rankshift Professional at $189/mo annual (350 prompts a day), Otterly Premium at $489/mo (400 prompts, 4 base engines), and Peec Advanced at $495/mo (350 prompts, 3 chosen engines, more via add-ons). Profound's public plans stop at 100 prompts, HubSpot at 25 or 50, Semrush One at 200, and Ahrefs' 83-a-day allowance rules it out; beyond those caps you are in custom-quote territory.
One warning on this math: cost per prompt is a screening metric, not a decision. A prompt tracked daily on five engines generates five times the position data of the same prompt on one engine, and a tracker with exportable history is worth more than the same runs locked in a dashboard. Use cost per prompt to shortlist, then decide on cadence, engines, and export.
Alerts and history: the two specs nobody checks until it is too late
Alerts. Every vendor page says something about notifications; almost none say what triggers them, and this is the feature where marketing and product diverge most. From running daily tracking: the only alert configuration that works is a threshold on a 7-day average. Position in AI answers wobbles run to run, so an alert on single-run changes fires constantly until you mute it, at which point a real loss goes unnoticed for a month. Whatever tracker you trial, configure its alerting in week one and see whether you can alert on averages. If you can only alert on raw runs, plan to do the smoothing yourself off exported data.
Historical data and export. Your position history is the asset you are paying to build, and switching costs are entirely about whether you can take it with you. The published state of play: Rankshift offers Looker Studio, MCP, and REST API access on its listed plans; Profound holds API access at the Enterprise tier; Semrush includes 300 reports a day; Peec trends full daily history in-product, and we assemble client reporting from it weekly. Before you subscribe anywhere, confirm three things: per-prompt per-engine granularity in the export, history retention beyond the current quarter, and a machine-readable format. A tracker that only exports chart images has your data hostage.
Who should pick what
- Agencies and in-house teams running a real program: Peec AI. Daily runs, position and visibility per engine, 50 to 350 prompts by tier, unlimited users, and it is the one on this page we stake client reporting on every day. Scope your prompt set and your engine choices first, since engines beyond the included 3 are paid add-ons now.
- Maximum prompts per dollar, tolerance for a young product: Rankshift. $82/mo for 150 prompts a day across 9 available engines is the best published ratio in the category. Use the 30-day trial to verify the credit math and the alerting before you move reporting onto it.
- Budget tracking with mainstream engines: Otterly.ai. $29/mo to start, $189 for a serious 100-prompt set. Price your add-on engines honestly first.
- Already deep in the Semrush or HubSpot stack: the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit at $99/mo per domain gives daily prompt rankings next to your SEO data, and HubSpot AEO at $50/mo (free trial, included with Marketing Hub Pro and Enterprise) is a legitimate starter tracker if 25 daily prompts on 3 engines covers your category.
- Enterprise procurement, security review, nine-engine coverage: Profound. Skip Starter unless ChatGPT-only tracking genuinely matches your buyers; the product this brand is known for lives at Growth and above.
- Already paying for Ahrefs: Brand Radar at a marginal $199/mo. As a fresh standalone purchase, the $328/mo minimum stack is beaten on almost every criterion above.
Key takeaways
- AEO rank tracking is sampling, not lookup: answers are non-deterministic, position means order of mention, and only daily cadence produces trends you can trust.
- Evaluate on five specs: refresh cadence, per-engine position metrics, alerts on change, historical export, and cost per tracked prompt. Ignore feature lists that do not speak to those five.
- At 100 prompts, published pricing runs $82 (Rankshift, annual) to $399 (Profound Growth, yearly), roughly $0.82 to $3.99 per prompt per month, with engine coverage explaining most of the spread.
- At 350 prompts the published market shrinks to Rankshift ($189), Otterly Premium ($489), and Peec Advanced ($495); everything else is custom quotes.
- Alert on 7-day averages, never single runs, and confirm raw history export before subscribing. Those two specs decide whether the tracker is an instrument or a screenshot machine.
- Our pick for teams running a real program is Peec AI from $95/mo, the tracker we run our own client position tracking on daily.
A tracker measures the race, it does not run it
Whichever tracker you pick will tell you, with daily precision, where you rank in AI answers and which way it is moving. Moving the number is a different discipline: winning citations on the third-party pages the engines retrieve, answer-first content, and structured data. That is the work we do at AEO Labs, on top of the same daily tracking described here. If your position data needs changing rather than watching, book a strategy call.
